Hearkening back to it’s military roots, the original greatcoat had a very specific purpose (to keep soldiers alive in freezing temperatures) and a very specific silhouette (loose fitting and double breasted, with military accoutrements such as epaulets and throat latches).
Of course, today’s “greatcoat” can generally refer to any type of heavy, warm overcoat that is typically longer and bulkier than other coats. The length remains key – it must start below the knee, but past that it can be anywhere from mid-calf to floor-sweeping. The material must be densely woven and substantial, whether it’s wool, cashmere or one of the many varieties of thick-pile synthetics. Tailoring is a must, but don’t interpret that to mean boring, as there are plenty of designers out there enjoying taking the minimalist design and having all sorts of fun with it.
