Skirt It Up! What’s New for S/S 2021

Spring is here and summer is not far behind, which means skirt weather is now in full force. Ready to bare those legs but not sure what’s trending this season?

Here at SLH we’ve been tracking five major movements – from pretty and sheer to mini and cute. Let’s shake a leg then…

MARCH OF THE MINIS

They are back and they are short. Minis are showing up and showing off in all sorts of patterns this season. Here’s five options along with some ways to style them

Nicole Miller, Daisy Field Scarf Mini Skirt $110

Retro prints are groovy this season. Contrasting and bold colors will make your eyes swim with joy. Surprisingly versatile, our choice here looks instantly fresh with a white tee. Toss on an oversized boyfriend jacket and you are officially office-ready.

Windsor, Belted Cargo Mini Skirt $34.90

The Utilitarian movement is still very much alive and well, as this cargo mini can attest. We love the high-rise waist on this burgundy beauty, along with pockets that can actually hold stuff (no sewn-in mocks here!). Wear it with a laidback tee or go full Gorpcore with your fav puffy jacket.

Free People, Black Coated Mini Skirt $55.00

Leather continues to be a steady fixture in both winter and spring wardrobes. This vegan leather version has a nice amount of give so you won’t feel like anything is ‘stuck’ on you, even as the temperature rises. Perfect as a transition piece, match it with a sweater and tights for cooler temps and then go bare-legged with a crop top when spring has sprung.

Nicole Miller, Sunshine Paradise Mini Skirt $225

This bold floral skirt has so much going for it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t have it in your wardrobe by now. A flattering smocked waist and feminine ruffles combine to create one easy to wear item. All it needs is a little white tee and you have a look that’s both put together and laid back. Nice!

rag & bone, High-Rise Mini Skirt $198.00

This, ladies, is your summer staple, mini-fied. White demin goes with…well just about darn near everything for summer. A definite investment piece for years to come.

AT-THE-KNEE SKIRTS

Pencil, A-line or flowy, the Knee Length skirt is moving to the forefront of silhouettes this season. And why not? There is a reason most classic business skirts hit this length…it’s the most universally flattering for all body shapes and sizes. And while its predecessors may have come across as a bit “expected”, designers are shaking things up with high slits, new materials and bold patterns to give this paragon of the paradigmatic a whole new ‘do…

Windsor, By Your Side Button Down Demin Skirt $32.90

Demin skirts aren’t just for weekends anymore. This straight, knee length number gets just a bit sexy with a high front slit. Wear it with a slinky top for cocktails with friends, or to the office with a crisp button down and a wide belt.

American Giant, Ponte Skirt $100

We’re loving the athflow vibe this dark blue and sporty white-striped skirt gives off. Stretchy athletic material makes it easy to move in and helps keep its fitted look.

Elie Tahari, Vegan Leather Pull-on Skirt $148.80

Leather again, this time in a looser, at-the-knee profile. We’d style this up with a sorbet-colored knit top and some adorable kitten heels.

Good American, Off Site Knit Skirt $64.90

Loungewear-worthy knit gets a refresh in the form of a body-con, high-slit skirt. This actually comes in a few colors, but we gravitated towards this marvelous olive that is sure to be a staple in your wardrobe.

Escada, Boucle Skirt $279.99

Office ready with a peter pan collar shirt, or toughen it up with your favorite band t-shirt and some combat boots. This one is a surprising multi-tasker, just waiting for you.

TIME FOR TULLE!

Fresh, frothy and oh-so-girly. These floating beauties are the of-the-moment trend with a ferocity of demand we haven’t seen since Carrie Bradshaw sashayed her way onto our screens.

Shein, Solid Pleated Tulle Skirt $20.00

Mint green is kinda breaking the internet right now. Grab yourself this steal-of-a-find and enjoy either gussied up with heels or chilled out with some fun flatform sandals.

Carolina Herrera, Silk-Lined Tulle Skirt $499.99

This one has us highkey embracing our inner Black Swan. With a smattering of tiny rainbow crystals, your color options up top are pretty much endless. Consider this your new go-to for all your dressy events this spring and summer.

Si-Jay, Midi Tulle Skirt $195.00

Bright, light and in this season’s runway “it” color, Illuminating Yellow. Bring the sunshine with you wherever you go…skipping is approved in this number.

P.A.R.O.S.H., Pleated Tulle Skirt $250.00

Proving you can wear tulle to the office, this mocha midi shows precisely how neutral can never be boring.

DB, Tulle Midi Skirt w/Pockets $99.95

The ultimate in girly-fem, we’d go full Material Girl with this one and style it up with some lug boots, leather moto jacket and some choice statement jewelry. Not feelin the Madge? Pair it with a pastel midriff floss top and some colorful Tevas.

RETURN? OF THE SKORT

TBH it’s not like the trend went anywhere…skorts have continued to be popular among active women for decades. With all the illusion of a micro-mini, but the total functionality of shorts, skorts have gone big this season. Designers are giving skorts new life with upscale fabrics and shapes.

Aeropostale, Asymmetrical Button Skort $15.00

Channel your inner Cher but don’t be clueless about ways to be comfortable. Wear this pretty plaid with a crisp white button down or go with another of this season’s big skirt trends and wear it as a coordinating top and skirt combo.

Rue21, Blue Plaid Plus Size Skort $21.99

Definitely a crowd pleaser, this summer plaid print is all set for your outdoor activities. A little breezy? No wardrobe malfunctions here!

Boston Proper, Beyond Travel Skort Plus $69.50

Made from a wrinkle-resistant material, this one you can take straight out of the suitcase and go. Comes in a few color options, but who can resist the pop of bubblegum pink?

Lulus, Perfect Print Vegan Suede Skort $29.00

Hitting the Festival circuit this year? Then you need this skort. It’s micro-mini perfection without the concern of the “bending over peepshow”. Right at home with some tough accessories but just as awesome a fit with a white lacy embroidered top and some flatform espadrilles.

Valentino, Gingham Check Skort $189.00

Hitting up the summer sessions this season? Take a break from the sweatpants and embrace the skort. It’s just as comfortable with a slub tee but looks way more pulled together. In fact this red and black checked lovely is presentable enough to be office-worthy. Just add some colored tights and a collared knit top.

PLEATED PERFECTION

It’s official…pleats are here to stay. While the midi version remains strong, there is really no bad length for this style. It lends itself to off-duty flirty, buttoned up business-ready and well, just about everything in between.

Three Bird Nest, Roamer Maxi Skirt $29.99

Need a shot of neon in your S/S wardrobe? Add this bright beauty to your rotation. Silky satin in a relaxed fit, you’ll breeze your way around in this pleated maxi skirt. Style it boho with a corset top or tap into some swirling psychedelic prints. This skirt can handle it!

The Kooples, Long Pleated Skirt with Lace $298

Leave it to the The Kooples to showcase how pleats can be fashion forward. Made from black crepe with decorative tone-on-tone lace strips, this elegant asymmetrical skirt is couture but still approachable. We’d style this with a constructed muslin blouse, or go for a bold blend of styles with a denim jacket and sandals.

adidas, Pleated Midi Ripstop Midi Skirt $56.00

Not satisfied with just the usual materials, many brands are experimenting with unexpected combinations. Case in point, this gorg midi pleated skirt from adidas, which is made from ripstop fabric (something you’d normally equate with track pants and jackets). We have to say, we’re loving this combination of light-as-air but wears-like-iron concept of a skirt. We’d style this with a fitted polo to channel some Americana vibe, or even a popped collar button up and skinny designer belt for work.

Lulus, Hello Pink Color Block Pleated Midi Skirt $58.00

Speaking of work, this charming, color-blocked midi is an easy choice office choice. Pair it with a chunky sweater (tucked in front, ‘natch) or satin ruffled top, grab shoes, keys, coffee and go!

Nic + Zoe, Gray Pleated Skirt $29.99

At knee length? Check. Sheer overlay? Double Check. The last of our choices in our collection is most certainly not least. The neutral charcoal color pairs excellently well with anything in your wardrobe. Dress it up or down…and did we mention it’s on sale? You’re welcome.

Whatever length or style you decide to go for this season, we hope we’ve given you some solid styling advice.
