In the Trenches – SS20 is all about the Trench Coat

Sure, most of the country is still dealing with the winter deep freeze. But spring is just around the corner (if you can believe it) and with it, we’re seeing some drool-worthy trends developing for spring/summer 2020.

Case in point – Trench coats are taking over. Granted they’ve been around for some time now, and we do mean a while…as in since the start of the last century (1901 to be exact). Originally part of the UK officer’s uniform, this incredibly versatile coat has been reinvented and drawing eyes of appreciation once more, as we head into 2020.

Here’s this season’s options

STATEMENT

Talk about giving an old silhouette a new twist, the new statement trenches are made for the gal who’s read the playbook and tossed it on it’s ear.

MSGM, Ruffled Houndstooth Trench Coat $743

The trench goes flirty with this frilly version by MSGM. Sensible houndstooth and classic trench styling gets turned on its ear with the addition of a large asymmetrical ruffle. Chic? Oui!

Stella McCartney, Beige Twill Trench Coat, $1,465

Classic structure gets a modern upgrade in silhouette with this number by Stella McCartney. The oversized front flaps and exaggerated side slits create a fresh play on proportions, making this coat ideal for the woman who loves a mild twist on the trench archetype.

Halston, Suiting Trench Coat $595

The iconic Halston trench coat, re-envisioned in lipstick red. Statement piece? Major check.

ANIMAL PRINT

At this point, you could probably argue that animal prints are the new neutral…and honestly we think you wouldn’t be wrong. So if you’re on the prowl for something purrfect for this upcoming rainy season, this season’s looks do not disappoint…

Catherine Malandrino, Faux Suede Leopard Print Trench Coat $46.97

The heavier fabric of this one makes it ideal for those early spring days when the weather is incredibly transitional and you need something that can equally weather rain and cold.

AFRM, Snake Printed Trench Coat $39.97

This one’s a charmer. Snakeskin as a print trend came on pretty heavy in 2019 and now as we head into 2020, it shows no sign of slowing down.

Elie Tahari, Watson Coat $698

Even the Minimalist Girl can have a flirt or two with her wild side. This traditionally tailored number from Tahari adds a peek-a-boo of leopard print at the lapels and as the reverse on the belt.

CHECK YOUR PLAID

SATINY SHINE

It almost seems a contradiction, the utilitarian trench and satiny, flowy fabrics that seem more akin to pajamas. But that’s kind of the point, really. Reach for these numbers when you’re looking to throw on that final touch of evening glam.

Alexis, Jocasta Satin Trench Coat $469

Lustrous and sleek, this cream colored beauty from Alexis is dripping with old hollywood glam.

The mauve color is both unexpected and trend, with a hint of shimmer that immediately reads evening chic. We also really love the low midi length, sure to will keep your legs warm, even when you decide to hit up the night in your shortest cocktail dress.

WONDERFUL WOOL

As much as we’d love for spring to be a steady, slowly warming trend of a season, we all know better, right? For those days that seem to be rainy-drizzly-cold-repeat, the best thing to do is reach for the wool.

Sportmax, Black & Navy Khat Trench Coat $1,575
