Outfits To Meet The Family

Whether you’ve been dating a while, or perhaps the timing just seems right, having your partner invite you to Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner with their family is a big deal (spoiler alert – even if they say it’s not, it is).

This is a level of trust that needs to be respected. This person whom you care about deeply is allowing you in to an event that is reserved for family and trusted friends. Out of that appreciation, it’s only fair that you dress appropriately. Does that mean wearing something completely not you? Absolutely not. But consider approaching your outfit like you would your first date. A good first impression goes a long way.

Lucky you, we’ve put together 10 fantastic outfits that are stylish, yet comfortable and easy as…pumpkin pie.

NIPPY? DON’T TRIPPY

If your partner’s family venture takes you towards the Central or Eastern U.S. area of the country, you can expect to enjoy a very “traditional” Fall weather temp. That means lots of gorgeous foliage, and more than a little freezing rain and possible snow, to go with it.

Nothing beats a classic put-together look. Start with Windsor’s mock wrap knit dress and then slide into a pair of toasty taupe, over-the-knee boots. Keeping the chill at bay, we add a chic, tailored faux wool trench. Aurate NY’s unique jacket earrings aren’t just beautiful, they’re made from sustainably sourced, recycled 14k gold. Finally, Mansur Gavriel’s deep claret hobo bag is a perfect medium size for carrying all your necessities in style.

When you need to just jump into it, have some fun with autumn’s moody palette, namely dark purples, reds and browns. A wide leg jumpsuit from Love, Bonito is the anchor for the look, which we pair with a dark floral mesh top. Mansur Gavriel’s decadent burgundy booties will give you solid footing, while The Kooples’ chocolate brown jacket keeps things cozy. For accessories, we add a fantastic metallic leather bag and a little bling courtesy of Cato’s statement earrings.

Texture abounds in this next fit. A marvelous floral velvet top and fuzzy plaid skort set the stage and pair perfectly with some winter white cable knit tights. Dove gray, quilted booties and a cropped corduroy jacket in buffed tan keep the layers going. Last but not least, we complete things with an out-of-this-world celestial charm necklace, courtesy of Rebecca Minkoff.

This color combo of sweet neutrals is a surefire fit that is also super comfy. The cream Pointelle knit sweater dress evokes all the cozy feels and pairs amazingly well with Mina Perhonen’s patterned overcoat from La Garconne. With a nod to this season’s big moto boot obsession, these olive green beauties from Tod’s are stylish and sturdy. All that’s left to complete the chic is M. Gemi’s shoulder bag and TOUS’s two-tone, organic sculpture earrings.

BUNDLE UP, BUTTERCUP!

So how about if your travel takes you to the upper Midwest or Great Lakes region? Well, you are most definitely going to understand the difference between “cold” and “wind-chill cold”. Layering is your new best friend here, and as a general rule of thumb you’re going to want to expose as little skin as possible.

Having said that, you do not have to settle for looking less than amazing when meeting the folks. Here are our options…

Frigid temperatures? When in doubt, go long. We start with a ribbed knit, long sleeve maxi dress, then add an extra layer with a chic, leopard print long cardi. These cold weather booties by Seychelles are your secret weapon in keeping your tootsies toasty – sleek, water resistant moto boot outside, warm lined inside. Finally, Ganni’s ankle-length quilted puffer coat doesn’t mess around and will keep you comfy while navigating from point a to point b. Finally, we add just a touch of bling with a pair of cool, twisted metal hoops from David Yurman’s Sculpted Collection.

Go classic americana with this next ensemble. Easy fit straight leg jeans pair with a cozy cream-colored cashmere crew to set the stage. Caramel colored booties by Clarks and Dooney & Bourke’s wristlet give some much needed rich tones, while Tory Burch’s 80s inspired earrings and Cotopaxi’s retro apres ski jacket bring the nostalgia.

Is there a lot of relative-hopping happening? Going in-between several family stops calls for a cozy casual fit. A cheery striped cashmere sweater from Michael Stars and Windsor’s wide-leg cargo jean combination is a great staple look. To it, we add a solid pair of winter boots, namely Birkenstock’s oiled leather slip ons. For coverage when you need it, a super soft, faux fur teddy coat will wrap you in luxe comfort. Finally we add Dooney & Bourke’s perfectly sized medium satchel and a pair of sparkly gold drop earrings, with matching ear cuff and that brings the whole fit together beautifully.

WARMER CLIMES? GOOD TIMES

Some folks would say you pulled the lucky card if your travels take you to the West, South West, Hawaii or bottom South East of the U.S. These areas for the most part will allow you to enjoy the holidays as if you were on a spring vacation. Why not use this excursion as a way to treat yourself to a tiny bit of pre-shopping for the upcoming S/S 2025 seasons?

When in doubt, the LBD (as in Little Brown Dress) is always your best friend. This off-the-shoulder, dropped waist mini version by Windsor is so chic. Keeping with the casual daytime vibe, we pair it with some cute, rose nude heels from Nina and Swarovski’s playful lucent hoops. For the final accessories, we grab a sexy snake print satchel from Hobo’s vintage section and a JIC colorful scarf by RockFlowerPaper.

Cute and comfortable is key, which is why we fell in love with this ensemble. A sleek, one-shouldered bodysuit pairs perfectly with a trendy, animal print maxi skirt. Keep the easy chic going with fun fringe tote by Nannacay (fringe is a huge S/S 2025 trend) and a pair of oh-so-comfortable sandals from Birkenstock’s Papillio collection. Finish it out with a pair of Marc Jacobs sunnies in frosted pink and 18k gold plated moonstone earrings by Satya (moonstones are said to be good luck!).
