Outfits to Meet the Family

Whether you’ve been dating a while, or perhaps the timing just seems right, having your S.O. invite you to Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner with their family is a big deal (spoiler alert – even if they say it’s not, it is). This is a level of trust that needs to be respected. This person whom you care about deeply is allowing you in to an event that is reserved for family and trusted friends. Out of that appreciation, it’s only fair that you dress appropriately. Does that mean wearing something completely not you? Absolutely not. But consider approaching your outfit like you would your first date. A good first impression goes a long way.

Lucky you, we’ve put together 7 fantastic outfits that are stylish, yet comfortable and easy as…pumpkin pie.

NIPPY? DON’T TRIPPY

If your S.O. family venture takes you towards the Central or Eastern U.S. area of the country, you can expect to enjoy a very “traditional” Fall weather temp. That means lots of gorgeous foliage, and more than a little freezing rain and possible snow, to go with it.

Nothing beats a classic put-together look. Start with Windsor’s knit midi dress in gorgeous green and then slide into a pair of dark cognac colored, croc-embossed boots by Paris Texas. Next we add some interesting *twists* – first from ShopVida’s new collection, these handmade earrings are created in India (by sustainable wage workers) using an ancient hand knotting technique called Gundi; then we finish things up with Mansur Gavriel’s cozy, plush mini bucket bag from their 22-23 Winter Collection.

Show off your love of rich wintery color blends with this next fit. Diane von Furstenberg’s puffed and printed mock turtleneck sets the stage and pairs perfectly with Paige’s rich, cocoa velvet, cropped pants. Sam Edelman’s patchwork booties add some fun, while Elie Tahari’s buttery hobo bag and Kendra Scott’s multi-colored ring bring the luxe.

This color combo of autumnal browns and sweet neutrals is a surefire fit that is also super comfy. The cream Pointelle knit sweater evokes all the cozy feels and pairs amazingly well with Windsor’s silky pumpkin midi skirt. With a nod to this season’s big boot obsession, these western style knee highs from Bellini are stylish and sturdy. All that’s left is to complete the chic by adding Dooney & Bourke’s new season shoulder bag in dark brown and of course, bring on the bling with Baublebar’s tasselling rhinestone earrings.

BUNDLE UP, BUTTERCUP!

So how about if your travel takes you to the upper Midwest or Great Lakes region? Well, you are most definitely going to understand the difference between “cold” and “wind-chill cold”. Layering is your new best friend here, and as a general rule of thumb you’re going to want to expose as little skin as possible.

Having said that, you do not have to settle for looking less than amazing when meeting the folks. Here are our options…

Skirts and sub-zero temps can co-exist. This gorgeous green, Vegan leather skirt is long and dense enough of fabric to be just as insulating as pants. Once inside, a rosy, Irish handmade sweater will add a warm burst of color. Underneath, keep things moving with Clark’s knee-high, warm lined boots. The inner lining will keep your feet warm and the thick rubber soles will keep them steady. Playing off the darker tones, these black and gold hoop earrings from Tous add interest to your lobes, and Marc Jacobs’ new season colorblock shoulder bag brings everything together.

A little après ski, and a little preppy, this outfit will keep you cozy indoors and out. Basin and Range’s chunky, ombré sweater and Sorel’s cold weather boots add a touch of Aspen, while J. McLaughlin’s checked legging pant and Aurate’s sleek hoops (a new collab between the brand and Michelle Choi) bring a preppy vibe.

WARMER CLIMES? GOOD TIMES

Some folks would say you pulled the lucky card if your travels take you to the West, South West, Hawaii or bottom South East of the U.S. These areas for the most part will allow you to enjoy the holidays as if you were on a spring vacation. Why not use this excursion as a way to treat yourself to a tiny bit of pre-shopping for the upcoming S/S 2023 seasons?

Here’s a sneak peek at two 2023 trends that you’ll get to enjoy right now…

If you haven’t already jumped on one of the biggest trends from 22 – Barbiecore – there’s still plenty of time, because all signs point to this mother-of-all-pinks look still dominating its way into your wardrobe in S/S 2023. So what better time to try this trend out? Start with Trina Turk’s hot pink mini dress (which we found on sale…YW!) and add to it some serious bling drop earrings from the official Barbie™ x Kendra Scott collection that just launched. With so much color punch going on, we recommend keeping the rest of your accessories in neutral. Some lovely woven espadrilles and Dooney & Bourke’s crossbody, both in creamy white, will complete your look.

If your destination means you’ll be heading somewhere really warm, you may feel a little panic. After all, most of us have been settling into sweater weather so a little wardrobe paralyzation is to be expected. Cute and comfortable is key, which is why we fell in love with this sunny little number from Lygia & Nanny. The length is just right and the fabric is light and breezy. Keep the chic going with Dolce Vita’s angled heel sandals (super trending right now). And from the new S/S 23 collection, 0711 has the cutest woven bag (which is surprisingly roomy) and lastly, slide on a pair of fun shades. These beauties from Knockaround are actually on sale right now for under 20 bucks!
