Mismatched Harmony – How to Wear Mismatched Earrings

SLH Accessories Editor –

You’ve seen it on the runways, on social, and by now on more than a few occasions, IRL. The mismatched earring trend took winter by storm and is showing no signs of slowing down for spring. In fact, if anything, this style is getting even more bold, with daring combinations that might leave you a little uncertain where to start?

The SLH editors are here to put your FOMO to rest. With the help of a few ground rules, you can easily ease into this trend. Before long, you’ll be experimenting with your own combinations – which is really what fashion is all about!

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT

If you’re not sure about how to start translating this trend, this is a great first step. Start with looking for earrings in similar metals, colors or stones with one short (a post or drop that hugs the earlobe), and one longer that drops at least twice the length of the first. See below for some of our easy inspirations…

OPPOSITES ATTRACT

Once you’re comfortable with the concept, you can get a little more creative. Keeping in mind the first rule of length, you can move into playing with shapes, sizes and related ideas. See our fellows down below? Notice how even though each is very different from the other, they go together because of similar shapes, colors, or as is the case with our cute little bee – adding some flowers on the opposite side tells a fun visual story!

THINK OUTSIDE THE LOBE

For when you’re feeling really fierce, here’s the advanced class. Do you have multiple piercings? Or maybe just the classic two? Start thinking of using your whole ear as a canvas. Want to mix your metals? Do it, but keep the shapes the same. Looking to mix up colors? Try pulling one from your outfit and another contrasting but complementary color on your ears. Really looking to layer it on? Keep the themes similar, that way no matter how many layers you put on, the overall look still flows together. Amazing? Sure! Take a look at these for ideas for multiple and the classic two…

  1. My Grand daughter was wearing mix-matched earrings back in late 90’s. Not everyone has to wait for the runways. They are very cute on lots of people, but not for everyone.

    • Stylish women like your grand daughter are always ahead of the curve. Thanks for sharing with us, Joan!
