Friendsgiving – What to Wear and Bring

Getting together for Friendsgiving this year? Our editors curate a fun selection of casual fits, as well as some great host gift suggestions…

You won’t find it on the calendar, but this *unofficial* get-together meal with you and your close friends has really come into its own . Today’s version usually happens before Thanksgiving, however it’s origins actually started on the holiday itself. Around the late 80s/early 90s, university students and other young professionals just entering the workforce, were sometimes unable to head home for Thanksgiving. So instead, they gathered with other friends in similar situations. This practice was in turn made famous when the show “Friends” aired in 1994 and the rest, as they say is history.

The general rule of thumb for Friendsgiving is “fun and casual”. So when it comes to your look, you could probably show up in a tee and jeans and be just fine. Be that as it may, these are your good friends, so why not make some effort? We’ve got a few budget-friendly ideas…

Starting with this knit midi dress from Windsor. Could that autumnal color be any more perfect? We think not. Paired with a sleek over-the-knee riding boot from Nine West, this look is pretty much complete as is. All it needs is an on-trend silver coin necklace and statement ring. As for what to bring along? Look no further than Harry & David’s inhouse line of wines. They’re grown and crafted from some of the best wineries in H&D’s home state of Oregon (which is particularly famous for their award-winning Pinots).

Festive doesn’t have to be fussy. Channel a little après-ski 2.0 with this next fit. We combo KAVU’s outdoorsy sweater with a ski-bunny worthy, faux suede mini skirt and Cariuma’s fleece lined high tops from their latest collection. For our final touch, we go big statement with Baublebar’s Snow What You Got snowflake earrings. As for what to bring? How about some fantastic pre-turkey munchies with the Popcorn Factory’s assorted gourmet pop corn set?

While fixings are being fixed, or maybe post-meal (when that Tryptophan threatens to kick in!), keep the energy up by bringing a great game to your celebration. From the creators of Exploding Kittens comes their newest party game, Really Loud Librarians. It’s quick to learn, great for groups, and addicting to play. A fun game deserves an equally fun look which we get with an easygoing, textured knit mini dress and some fantastic fitting over the knee boots in dark forest green. Accessorize with a pair of sweet vintage earrings by Silver, then give your nails a swipe of on-trend moody green, and it’s game over, you win.

Who doesn’t love a good cargo? These wide leg, cargo jeans from Windsor will keep you warm, plus we’re loving the cool lived-in vibe as well. Pair this with a crisp, cropped button down, grab a long, gorgeous gemstone necklace from Satya, and keep those tootsies warm with Birkenstock’s Ebba platform boot. As for what to bring, why not give the gift of warmth and fragrant memories? Fall Hearth by brand Homesick is one of their most popular candles, with scents of orange peel, pumpkin, autumn leaves, birchwood, pine cones, moss, and cinnamon sticks. Hand poured, soy wax and made of 100% cotton wick.

What are the holidays for if not the perfect excuse for a little glow up? We start this fit with a cool cutout corset top, adorned with the cutest rhinestone bows for a nice touch of bling. Then we add some animal attraction with a bold leopard print maxi skirt, a pair of slouchy suede booties and for the personal touch, Baublebar’s choose-your-charm necklace.  As for what to bring your host, if they’re a coffee lover then they will very much appreciate this single-origin Salvadorian roast from Onyx Coffee Lab. These highly sought after grade of beans are grown and produced like fine wine, with notes of rose, white grape, fig, and black tea.

Are you really feeling the pinch of the pocketbook? This combo comes in under $100 – that’s for the fit and the gift! We start with a sleek, chocolate mini dress with a very trendy off-the-shoulder neckline. Next we add some fun (and warm!) textured tights from Hanes and Beach’s super cute dark olive booties, both of which we found on sale for a steal. Finally, we scored this long pendant necklace made from semi-precious stone beads, also on sale. And for the gift, we found these scrumptious caramel apples, all decorated in fall decor. Talk about a win win!

For our last look, we create a trifecta of preppy cool. We start with 525 America’s puff sleeve cardi that pairs perfectly with Windsor’s plaid pleated mini. When we put these together with Vera Wang’s warm cable knit tights, a golden combo of mary janes and a cozy faux wool trucker jacket, we have an outfit that is sure to please. And speaking of pleasing, award-winning author and freelance food writer, Benny Roff’s latest book, Speakeasy, will have your host excited and ready to master a whole new world of prohibition cocktails and mixed drinks.
