Saying leopard print is ‘classic’ is possibly one of the most lowkey statements ever. This popular animal print is positively ancient. It had Pantheon approval, as displayed in artworks of the Greek god Dionysus as well as the goddess Cybele of Phrygian (as in King Midas’s kingdom). King Tut and Roman Emperor Honorius were also huge fans. Fast forward a few centuries, and Christian Dior created a literal zeitgeist by including it in his iconic 1947 fashion show, then into the 60s and 70s, it became the print du jour of rock stars and celebrities alike, and finally, no 90s mob wife’s outfit could be complete without that long, luxe leopard coat.
Safe to say, its popularity has cycled in and out, with some exits more welcome than others (looking at you, 2010s, and those tacky, crazy-colors-never-seen-in-nature versions).
So when we say leopard print is back for this season, we are talking about the authentic print. No cartoonist abstracts, no neon cringe. This season’s leopard is a classic print that, dare we say, reads like a neutral.
