Deconstructed Classics: The Not-so-Buttoned Up Button Up

-SLH East Coast Fashion Editor:

Nothing beats a classic? How about a classic with a twist? This fall is shaping up to showcase some absolutely brilliant concepts from designers taking those tried-and-true American classics and envisioning them in fresh new ways.

Consider the button up shirt. Aside from collar sizing, not a lot has happened to this little basic, until now. First came the cold-shoulder long sleeves, followed closely by many versions of Regrammed ‘shirting’ ranging from off the shoulder, no shoulder, ruffled, bell sleeved, bowed…the list goes on. We’ll admit, this look has been polarizing. Some totally adore it while others refer to the look as “business-class buccaneer”.

Not to worry, the SLH team is on the case. We’ve been keeping tabs as this initial spring fling look has evolved into a more fashionable fall staple. Here are our current fav ideas for how to wear these deconstructed shirts that strike the perfect balance between haute style and office friendly.

1 – Add a bold color – The appeal of this trend is it takes the classic and give it a twist. Why not build on that by taking another classic, the office pant, and giving it a twist with a shot of bold color? In our example, we chose pop pink and some punk inspired accessories to accentuate the playful side of the pinstripe top.

2 – Get a little quirky – Play off the fun nature of this piece by adding luxe pieces with a little quirk. These Hampshire ankle dress pants look demure from afar but close up you can see the super cute print is made up of swans. Add chic loafers in an unexpected color and top off the eclectic look with some colorful statement earrings.

3 – Show a little shoulder clavicle – There is certainly no lack of shoulder showing going on lately. One shoulder, off-the-shoulder, even cold shoulder. The question of office appropriateness? Most of our readers give it a pretty solid thumbs down. So if you really love the style, keep it office friendly like our example. This cute checkered number has the exaggerated open top but keeps the shoulders covered. Just the perfect showcase for your favorite delicate necklace. Our pick? Liza Koshy Limited edition gold choker from The Giving Tree. The jewelry is beautiful & unique and every piece purchased supports people transitioning out of homelessness.

Since this shirt is best worn tucked in, and therefore will blouse around the waist, an A line skirt is your best friend for keeping your silhouette polished, not puffy. Our editors really liked combining this look with another of this season’s hot trend of opulent embroidery + over-sized buttons. Neutral shoes and accessories minimize any potential detracting from your fabulous look.
