They are iconic and yet, every year designers are finding ways to constantly re-invent them, whether it’s updating a retro style to make them fresh again, or forging a new silhouette entirely, there’s never a dull moment with it comes to jeans and fashion.
So what’s winning us over this season? We’re so glad you asked, because 2024 is shaping up to be quite the expansive list of options with more cuts, lengths and colors than we’ve seen a long time. Helping you navigate these choices is something our Editors love to do, especially when it comes to our Annual Denim Guide. They put in the overtime to bring you the best of the trends emerging so far.

WIDE CHOICES
After so many seasons of circulation-stifling skinnies, it was inevitable the fashion zeitgeist would swing (lovers of the slim look, never fear – this year has friendly choices for you too!). The wide leg pant movement wouldn’t be much of a movement if it didn’t include jeans, right? And so this season we’re welcoming the puddle players, the monster cuffed and all the wide legs in between. Here’s a few options that made our favs list.
Quite possibly the most perfect pair we’ve seen. These high-rise wide leg jeans from NYDJ have ample leg room and a true blue denim color that easily transitions from casual tee to office-friendly button down. GRAY DAYS
Certain jean colors can be very cyclical. Gray jeans were once the darlings of the Y2Ks before (no pun intended) fading from our collective conscience. Fast forward to now, and you may be aware of a *tiny* fashion obsession we’ve been having with that era. New versions began making the rounds on the F/W 2023 runways at shows like Diesel and Loewe before hitting the streets in force on folks like Bella Hadid and Kendall, and the trend is showing no signs of slowing down as we head into our warmer climes.
Starting with our Editor’s choice for wearing the gray this season. Mott & Bow’s straight leg style Allen jeans have a classic, straight leg with slim tailoring and a perfect mid rise fit. Our Accessories Editor fell in absolute love with her pair, declaring, “It’s like wearing my favorite leggings with benefits, like the little ‘butt lift’ the 21% stretch gives me. They’re super comfortable, and I was surprised at how many items I already had in my closet that looked great with them. And I really appreciated that these are a true, neutral gray, so warm undertones (like myself) and cool tones can both wear it!”

SLIMMER DOWN
As promised earlier – lovers of the slim silhouette, you have not been forgotten. It’s true that (at least for the here and now) the uber-tight fitting skinnies are better off in the back of your closet. Instead, the slim fit is really having a main character moment right now. And really, we’re not even mad about it. Think more tailored than a straight fit, less bodycon than those 2010 jeggings. The best news? Most brands now are actively employing advanced stretch materials, so you can (literally) have your cake and eat it too.
Starting with one of our Editors everyday favorites, Mott & Bow’s slim boyfriend jean, the Laight. This medium weight jean has a modern, fitted silhouette that lends itself to, well, just about anything your day requires. One editor stated “I wore these on a four hour flight, got to my hotel, swapped out my sneakers and hoodie for a blazer and heels, and went straight to a business meeting without skipping a beat, afterwards I wore them out for happy hour with a cute top. I literally wore them for three totally different social situations and all I changed was my top and accessories.”

Love it or hate it, ripped denim is still going strong this season. Our take on keeping this look from going sleek to sloppy is to keep the distress looking intentional. Ripped seams on one (or two) knees will showcase the trend without veering into the “you should see the other guy” territory. This jean received our highest marks from our apparel editor, a self-professed white jean aficionado: “I’m always on the hunt for the next great white jean of the season. These are straight at the top of my list. The twill denim is so lightweight, I was amazed at how little showed through (even when I wore them with darker undies). The fit was dead on perfect for me and even after several washes in hot, they stayed true to my size.”

Dominating, well just about everything this season, the madness for metallics is at an all-time high. Joining the frenzy, we’re seeing the rise of foil jeans. From tempered and lustrous, to unapologetically shiny, silver is the absolute it girl this season.

ZADDY DADDY
We’ve run through our mom jeans and boyfriend jeans phase, so whose closet is next? If you guessed Dad, you’d be right. So what exactly is a “Dad” jean? They’re high waist, but not tapered like the Mom jean. They’re baggy, but don’t hang around the hips like the Boyfriend jeans. And they’re just a tad looser than your standard straight leg. So basically just what your comfort-loving, 90s Dad was sporting all those years ago. Who knew?
These relaxed straight legs from NYDJ understood the assignment. Great medium blue color, high waisted but loose and a roomy leg that drops straight from hip to ankle. All in all, this is our Editors favorite take on the new Dad jean.
