5 Must Have Jacket Styles for Spring 2020

As the mercury begins rising, at SLH, we’re on the hunt for what trends are taking over for this spring. 2020 is seeing a whole lot of returning retros (updated for the here & now, natch) as well as a focus on the classic staples. The utilitarian look continues to grow just as the 70s and 90s lookbacks are proving their staying power.

All in all, we’re seeing 5 major styles dominating their way into spring, by way of your closet. Let’s take a look!

90s CROPPED

Our love for all things 90s has hit its peak, and few things can top the revitalized popularity of the cropped jacket. But we’re not just looking to relive the golden days of Adidas. We’re spicing things up (pun intended) by mixing this retro style with current must-haves, like midi skirts and raw hem skinnies. Here’s some you’ll want right now…

Kenzo, White Iridescent Cropped Windbreaker $495

When people think of the 90s and cropped jackets, this version by Kenzo, is most likely the first thing that comes to mind. But once you’re past the material look and shape, that’s where the similarities end, because this technical jacket is all 21st century. Inside welt pockets are sized up for your smartphone, eyelet vents at the armscyes make overheating a thing of the past, and high-quality bungee-style drawstring fasteners keep everything in place.

Union Bay, Adelia Corduroy Jacket $60

Here in this version, Union Bay took a 90s staple fabric (corduroy) and made it fresh with a bright pink grapefruit color. The slight oversizing also gives this piece a bit more of a modern look. Really want to bring it forward? Pair it with something crimson to become this season’s of-the-moment color combo of “pink + red = instantly amazing”.

Aéropostale, Cropped Sherpa Hooded Jacket $35

With its soft body lining and cozy, faux sherpa lined hood, this cropped number is your perfect transitional piece for those cooler days.

Puma, Classics Full Zip Hoodie $49.99

Love the cropped look but wish you had a bit less exposure? Is that even possible? This extra plush fleece by Puma says Absolutely. The extra thick, fitted waistband gives you the coverage you crave while the ribbed texture accentuates the cropped look. We’re imaging these with your fav bike shorts and super chunky sneaks. Game on!

BOMBER JACKET

Speaking of the return of the 90s, the bomber jacket was the uniform for grunge kids everywhere…along with a solid pair of destroyed jeans and a dripping cool Victorian choker. Unlike the crop though, the bomber never truly languished in obscurity. The ease and style of this jacket maintained its ranking in the jacket mainstream for decades. As of this spring however, its fully re-establishing itself as a reigning staple for spring. Case in point…

Union Bay, Hugo Camo Hooded Jacket $24.99

This cool camo interpretation by Union Bay earns extra points with a contrasting soft grey hood. Perfect over top of a slip dress + tee.

Andrew Marc, Carli Faux Sherpa Collared Bomber Jacket $49

This buttery neutral fleece bomber is giving us tons of warm and fuzzies. Would look classic Americana with a black turtleneck & plaid skirt combo.

BB Dakota, Cat Fight Leopard Bomber $110

Give up your love of animal print just because the mercury is rising? Not without a fight we say. But seriously, animal prints are seasonally agnostic, so why not? This fun leopard print bomber makes for a great grab-and-go for errands, lunch with friends, weekend adventures…you name it!

Puma, Puma x Sophia Webster Bomber Jacket $150

This redunc collab between Puma and Sophia Webster gives us everything we love about Puma’s athlesiure vibe and Sophia’s feminine, bold and playful designs. With vibrant colors, metallic flashes and hints of animal print this jacket is NOT for the tame.

THE UTILITY JACKET

Another strong showing is the return of the utility jacket for spring. Expect new color options and different takes on materials.

Union Bay, Marinda Classic Utility Jacket $24.99

First up, this classic shaped utility jacket turns into ultimate eye candy with this dark plum color.

Everlane, The Chore Jacket in Spanish Clay $48

With a nod to the French style utility jacket, wearing this color pop beauty from Everlane is no chore. We’d love to see these with a dark wash denim and a white chelsea boot…tre chic.

Boston Proper, Gold Embellished Utility Jacket $59.98

Channel your inner Miss Jackson with this fantastic nod to the military-embellished 80s style jacket. Dress it up or down as you like because you, my dear, have “Control”…

Gap, Utility Leather Jacket w/Rib-Knit Trim $498

Taking the utility jacket into new territory, this soft leather interpretation from Gap is part rocker chic and part effortless casual.

70s VINTAGE

Ranchers coats, suede jackets, fringe coats, even satiny disco jackets…our obsession with 70s vintage stays strong. And why not?

Union Bay, Keith Retro Denim Jacket $27.99

We are loving this multi-material, throwback ranchers style jacket from Union Bay. Perfectly oversized to handle the necessary transitional layers to take you from chill winter to warm spring in style.

BB Dakota, Loose Ends Fringe Jacket $120

Listen up, 70s soul sistas, the suede on this lovely jacket may be faux, but the fringe is real. We adore this terra cotta take on the quintessential 70s suede jacket. You go, cowgirl.

Alice and Olivia, Lonnie Reversible Bomber $148.75

Take the letterman school jacket silhouette and add some satiny fabrics and fun color vibes and you’ve got the 21st century version of a jacket any cool disco girl would bring to her Studio 54 party.

Rachel Hollis Ltd., Faux Suede Jacket with Shearling Trim $91.56

Like the sumptuously awesome coat Kate Hudson wore in “Almost Famous”…but better…because its faux-nominal.

FITTED DENIM

An ode to the forever classic…the fitted denim jacket. No matter the wash, the color, the number of pockets & buttons, this time honored jacket continues to be THE one item every gal should have. Here’s some serious trending ones for this spring…

Union Bay, Brendan White Denim Jacket $32

White denim is trending big time for spring, especially when layered over another major trend – tie dye. Together this is your new zero-to-amazing-in-5-seconds look.

Aéropostale, Seriously Stretchy Medium Wash Denim Jacket $35

If ‘fitted’ sometimes leaves you feeling constricted, this super stretchy denim jacket by Aero is your new very best friend. The medium wash and classic cut will go with literally anything in your closet, from fall cargos and boots, to floaty summer florals and flip flops.

Everlane, The Denim Jacket in Black $62

This super dark black wash jacket from Everlane is made from rigid Japanese fabric that only gets better with time. This one’s a keeper, just like you.

Alice and Olivia, Ruffle Hem Jean Jacket $295

There’s just something about warmer temps that bring out the girly girl. This cinched waist meets flirty ruffles gives us the perfect combo of sweet.
