6 Fabulous Transition Pieces for Fall

Cooling weather doesn’t have to mean giving up all of your favorite summer pieces. Our editors are taking 6 favorite summer items and remaking them into the perfect Fall fits…

We are now officially into what many call the “in-between seasons”. That’s a sweet way of saying that weather-wise, our days are about to get pretty dysfunctional. But navigating these transitional periods doesn’t have to be equally unpredictable. We’ve got more than a few awesome ideas on how to take some of your current fav pieces (i.e. summer looks) and give them great duality by restyling them with some choice fall-friendly pieces.

Shall we begin?

#6 – THE FLORAL PRINT MAXI

Natasha Zinko, Floral Print Maxi Dress $351

(on Sale NOW from $701)

Floral maxis and summer are like Tom Holland and Zendaya…adorably made for each other. And while we still have those sunny days and warm sultry evenings, a dark floral beauty like this one will see plenty of use. But for those cooler days? Hey, there’s no reason to put this baby in a corner (of the closet, that is).

Here’s a whole new vibe to give your fem-flirty maxi a bit of rocker edge. We begin by throwing on top a semi-sheer white crop top (this one from Windsor is giving us big Daisy Jones energy). Next, we layer on one of this season’s biggest must-haves, the faux leather motorcycle jacket. Upgrade from the expected combat boot with a chicer sock boot, and finish everything off with an on-trend, whipstitch bag and a pair of sleek and sculpted hoop earrings from David Yurman’s new collection.

#5 – THE WHITE JEAN

NYDJ, Teresa Wide Leg Ankle Jeans $109

We’re guessing you’ve already seen a lot of use sporting this summer’s white denim in the season’s wide leg, cropped cut. With such a stylish silhouette, don’t be in a rush to pack these pants away!

Give your whites a fall flush by pairing them with some autumnal browns and neutrals. Boston Proper’s taupe turtleneck is a staple you’ll keep all season long and goes sweetly with Windsor’s cropped faux shearling vest. Lean into some of fall’s big trends with a rich, croc-embossed pump and a dark chocolate croissant purse from Nina. Finally, finish off with a fresh and colorful chunky enamel statement necklace from Adornia.

#4 – THE CORSET TOP

Windsor, Naturally A Classic Tweed Bustier $32.90

It’s been your go-to top for everything from music festivals to BBQs. Now the days are getting shorter and you’re contemplating putting this pretty item away for the season? Definitely not! Keeping this item in rotation is as easy as re-envisioning it by getting in touch with your Preppy side.

We start by taking a crisp, white button up from Summersalt, and tuck one side into a pair of 90s style, high rise jeans. For ours we chose the Windsor Glam Icon jeans that have cool visual interest with their lace up sides. Then we layer the corset over the shirt, creating that perfect nipped in waist. Next, we throw on a tailored blazer. In this case, we chose a dark tweed beauty from Love, Bonito, that complements the tweed in our bustier without looking too matchy-matchy. All that’s left is to add some eye-catching accessories, which for us included a gorg metallic silver ballet flat from Matisse and a large, signet ring by Zoe Lev. You are now ready to be fabulous.

#3 – THE SUMMER KNIT DRESS

Windsor, Stylish Snap Button Sweater Midi Dress $49.90

That airy, lightweight knit dress that was just so perfect for cooler summer nights doesn’t have to find itself folded away. Not when you can dabble in one of this season’s latest Y2k micro-trends, namely the Dresses-Over-Pants look.

Now to keep this from going too literal, as in aughties Disney star territory, skip any reference to skinny jeans and clogs (although clogs are a great on-trend item to rock with your wide legs and baggy pants, btw). Instead opt for a sleek pair of dress trousers. For our example, with this neutral brown knit above, we’re pairing it with some fun, slightly flared black pants (we’d recommend also undoing three or so of the bottom dress buttons to create more of a flowy, tunic feel). For shoes, go for something substantial and luggy, like these thick-soled chelseas by Palladium Boots. Finally we round things out with some artistic statement earrings and a visually arresting top handle bag by TOUS.

#2 – THE UTILITY ROMPER

Windsor, Trendsetting Babe Utility Romper $36.90

What started out as a bit of a “question mark” trend, Glam Utility took S/S 2023 by storm. The surprising versatility of these Y2k-inspired jumpsuits (Spring) and rompers (Summer) made them very much a staple piece for fashion lovers everywhere. If you’re eyeing your pair and wistfully wondering if those days of wearing are behind you, we’ve got the answer (Spoiler…that’d be “No”).

Turn this summer staple into your go-to by channeling some French girl energy. We start by giving your legs some insulation with a sexy, over-the-knee sock boot (yup, they’re back and were everywhere on the A/W runways from D&G to Versace). Up top, we keep the warmth going with Mott & Bow’s cozy cashmere turtleneck underneath. As for accessories, we go bold with some tubular large hoop earrings from Baublebar and Zoe Lev’s seriously statement evil eye ring. We finish things off with a luxe leather oversized tote from Mansur Gavriel in trending burgundy. Magnifique!

#1 – THE WHITE TANK

Summersalt, The Convertible Split Back Tank Top $50

Coming in as one of the #1 staple of any summer wardrobe, the humble white tank top truly is a master of all fits. One moment, it’s as casual as they come when matched with jean cutoffs and the next, elevated elegance when paired with a chiffon maxi. All things being equal, we all feel a bit sad when we think it’s time to put away our tanks.

But not so fast, because that white tank is the perfect starting piece to create an amazing streetwear utility look. Here is our daring combo, with a long leg slit camo maxi and matching trench. To this we add some impressive platform chelseas by Cirus NY, a multi-color, vintage inspired necklace by Kendra Scott and we finish with a cute, fringed wristlet.
