Have You Chosen Your Fall Bag Yet?

-SLH East Coast Fashion Editor:

Ah, fall dressing. With the changing of the seasons, it’s time to both whip out some old favorites and pick up some new pieces to flesh out your wardrobe. And of course, no Fall outfit is complete without The Fall Bag.

Here at SLH, we’re excited by so many of the new Fall bags. Lots of designs this year – oversized, micro, double bags, top-handle, box and belt bags. Textures are getting an update this season too, with lots of exotic skins (we support only Faux here at SLH), over-the-top bejeweled, sleek minimalism, and let’s not forget – Logomania is back. Colors are going in almost divergent directions, with 70’s muted earth tones in one camp, while neon and candy brights are still running strong. There’s enough variation this season to satisfy even the pickiest urbanite. Ultimately though, we like the idea of distilling down our options into three camps:

The Day Warrior

This is your day to day go-to bag. Smart, strong and structural are what you want to look for here. It needs to hold the essentials, both personal and professional – and look polished doing it. What a multi-tasker!

The Tag Tote by Marc Jacobs – $395.00

This generous tote by Marc Jacobs comes in the perfect shade of 70’s muted brick. Double straps allow for shoulder or handheld carrying, and the minimalist design makes it your perfect 2019 work bag.

Tory Burch Robinson Printed Double-Zip Leather Tote – $359.99

Word on the street…Logomania is back. For certain iconic brands, this offers the unique opportunity to refresh their logos in fun and new enticing ways. Like this playful spin by Tory Burch.

Mansur Gavriel Croc-effect Leather Tote – $695.00

Add a little embellishment to your workday bag with this season’s top texture, the croc-effect. Acceptable in all colors, this dark chocolate number stole our hearts (though at the price that we found it, it won’t steal your pocketbook!)

Ted Baker London Miriian Stab Stitch Large Leather Tote – $174.97

Another interesting trend for fall…the oversized “doctor’s bag”.

Lancaster Paris Parisienne Gloria Leather Tote – $219.97

It’s true, Millennial pink has gone kaput. In its place, fall 2019 is filled with earthy terracottas and rosy beige. Needless to say, we chose the latter in the form of this office-appropriate number by Lancaster Paris.

The Eye Candy

This is the cherry on the top of your awesome event outfit. Stylish, sophisticated and luxurious should be your mantra. Fall 2019 has great options here, including the return of the Clutch. Super luxe looks, candy color pops and ferocious animal prints are pretty much dominating right now.

The Kooples Mini Emily Printed Handbag – $460.00

All things animal print is certainly in this season, and we love this miniature fellow by The Kooples. Designed by Emily Ratajkowski, it has an adjustable shoulder strap for over-the-shoulder or crossbody. The strap can be removed entirely and you can use the top handle for carrying.

The Quilted Softshot 21 by Marc Jacobs – $450.00

This luxe beauty features this season’s love of all-things-quilted, and the fun color pop of juicy cherry. Sooo very tasty!

Florian London Meghan Leather Triangle Bag – $149.99

One of our favorite trends we’re seeing in fall bags is the playful use of unusual shapes. These can range from subtle, like this triangle evening bag by Florian London, to exotic pieces in the shapes of animals and everyday objects (see the JW Anderson Black Cap Bag also in our article).

Alice & Olivia Faye Square Flap Clutch – $495.00

When it comes to the embellished clutch for this season, it really is ‘go bling or go home’. Jeweled fringe, sparkly goodness and sequined galore is showing up in all manner of evening purses and clutches. With this trend, there really is no such thing as “too much”, so let your opulence reign supreme!

Daniele Ancarani Galaxy Venus White Patent Leather Handbag – $495.00

Gold is easily winning as the hardware metal of choice this fall. Presented in a sleek minimalist and structured style (with equally fabulous top handle), this chic bag by Daniele Ancarani is your new evening go to…

Weekend Casual

Sure, your amazing work bag could double-duty as your weekend go-to but when you get down to it, they are, and should be two different creatures. Your weekend bag is there to show off your personality, while of course handling a multitude of potential plans. Farmer’s market? Trip to wine country? Friend’s b-day bash? Or maybe just errands? A good weekend bag can handle it all. This Fall we have two bag styles vying for your attention –

The Multi-Tasking Medium

The Softshot 27 by Marc Jacobs – $425.00

Structured shapes and two-toned colors are two trends in one with this roomy, medium-sized crossbody by Marc Jacobs. The gorgeous acorn yellow puts it over the top.

Everlane The Form Bag – $235.00

With a lot of focus on prints and embellishments, there is an equally popular trend this fall, minimalism. But restrained doesn’t mean boring by any means. Quality materials are being well-crafted into highly wearable bags. This example by Everlane has simple, but striking lines and comes in one of the very coveted colors this fall, stately forest green.

JW Anderson Black Cap Bag – $850.00

Is it a hat or a bag? Tongue-in-cheek meets trompe l’oeil with a lot of designers this season. This cute crossbody masquerading as a cap by JW Anderson is our favorite for adding just a little jest to your weekend adventures.

Pink Haley Stella Teddy Textured Crossbody Clutch – $39.97

It’s official, Fuzzy bags are ruling the runways. Everything from shearling to fur. Here at SLH we support cruelty-free shearling and faux fur in all our reviews, and so we found ourselves absolutely adoring this deliciously frothy and fun fuzzy bag by Pink Haley. Adding this to your weekend ensemble will definitely give you the ‘warm fuzzies’.

Opening Ceremony Quilted Chinatown Tote – $120.00

Speaking of warm fuzzies…Puffy isn’t just about your coat anymore. This season, it’s also for your bag. This medium-sized tote by Opening Ceremony is just the perfect size for running errands around town.

and for excursions that don’t require carrying much…

The Belt Bag

Jacquemus ‘Le Chiquito’Bag – $545

Yes, micro bags are probably the least practical bag you will ever own. Does that make you want them any less? Didn’t think so. So what if the mighty lilliputian Jacquemus bag that started it all, evolved into something (slightly) more practical? Say, a bit more than double the size? Plus a matching strap that can be worn as a fabulous belt or in traditional shoulder strap style. Or you can use the lanyard clasp to fasten this little wonder onto another larger bag to produce another of this season’s major trends – double bagging. Maybe it’s more practical than you think after all?

T Tahari Krystal Utility Leather Belt Bag – $69.97

Speaking of slightly more practical evolutions, we’re liking the marrying of the season’s utility wear + hands free bag as it becomes the new urban Utility Belt. Batwoman would wear it proudly…

rag & bone Barrow Binocular Bag – $595.00

Fulfill your structured bag fetish with this cherry bomb belt bag beauty, inspired by the classic binocular bag. Strap of course can be worn on the shoulder instead of belt style, and it also comes with an optional top handle for carrying as a proper small bag.

Nanushka Off-White Minee Bucket Pouch – $370.00

Bucket bags, which had once fallen out of favor, are now coming back in a big way…and little ways too. This crème-colored bucket belt bag by Nanushka elegantly shows off how designers are revisiting the shape in unexpected ways.

Sam Edelman Darcy Belt Bag – $49.97

Maybe it’s just our way of holding onto Summer (if only in effigy it seems), but three dimensional flower motifs are an interesting twist for 2020 fall. While we can’t say for how long this trend will last, we can suggest this sweet, under $50 version by Sam Edelman that will let you enjoy the moment without breaking the bank.

Hey SLH fans, thanks for checking out our list of Fall favorites. Let us know what you think!
